Gardmore Abbey was established during the rise of the Nerath Empire, around 350 years ago. The combined village and abbey defined the northern frontier of Nerath until the founding of the village of Winterhaven 30 years later.
The abbey was built as a defensive fortification, and a prosperous village grew up between the outer wall and the cloister of the abbey, supporting the monastic knights of the abbey and enjoying their protection.
During the height of Nerath’s power, the holy knights of Gardmore Abbey fought valiantly against any monstrous and evil forces that encroached into the Nentir Vale, and on occasion launched campaigns to bring down bastions of evil in the world beyond the vale.
About 150 years ago, a resurgent force of orcs from the last campaign descended on the abbey. No one knows why or how the heretofore invincible knights were defeated, but the abbey was left in ruins, with no survivors.
Our story begins in the town of Fallcrest. Rain, the daughter of the Lord Warden Faren Markelhay has put out a summons to adventurers willing to risk their lives in find all the treasure they can carry (and also save reality).
Abraxus is a charlatan who was arrested in Fallcrest after tricking a guard into removing his clothing. Through spell and trickery, he escapes his jail cell and accidentally interrupts a meeting led by a young woman talking about “chaos” and “the future disappearing”.
